Because YES Matters

Why YES Matters

YES Matters refers to the yes - and not the lack of no that matters in consent. YES Matters UK was founded in 2013 by Gemma Aitchison, who was driven to take action after her little sister Sasha Marsden was tragically raped and murdered. Through her grief, Gemma discovered that Sasha's case was not an isolated one, and that it is preventable.

Working with academics, professionals, victims, young people, feminist activists and communities we have been working tirelessly to empower women and children and ensure that their voices are heard.

We have been working towards making that goal a reality for women and children of the UK ever since including changing UK law, government policy, writing papers, providing front line services and more.

Join us in our mission to make the UK a safer place for all.

Speaker & Lecturer

Gemma Aitchison is a passionate and experienced public speaker, having given educational and inspirational talks at a variety of high-profile events and venues. Some of her previous speaking engagements include the European Parliament, Westminster, Women's Aid National Conference, FILIA Conference, Amnesty International and Youth & Policy Conference. She speaks on VAWG, Youth homelessness, toxic masculinity and male mental health, sexual objectification, PSHE, gender stereotypes, pornography, child sexual abuse and exploitation, perpetrator prevention and more.

"Best speaker on violence against women and girls by a mile. She had the entire room silenced by the power of her words. People need to hear her and women and girls have a wonderful advocate in her.”

 - Annette Mckay

“I was so moved by Gemma’s words. The world is a better place for having her in it. One of the most amazing and emotional presentations I've ever seen.”

– Cllr Anna Rothery.

“I would happily recommend Gemma as a speaker. Passionate, articulate and real”.

– Sally Jackson from Standing Together Domestic Abuse services

“More people need to hear Gemma. Such intelligence, honesty, empathy, humour – she makes a real difference to the lives of girls and women”

– Cllr Jackie Alty

“Outstanding, harrowing, inspiring speaker”

– Mary Callaghan

“Gemma was powerful and moving but so strong, I will not forget her words. It will change how I work with young people in my work”

- Cllr Pat Draper

“Gemma is one of the best speakers I have heard in my life and I have been to many, many events. She speaks about difficult things but things that professionals need to hear. She speaks with knowledge, passion, real gravitas and it stays with you. Her story, her clear expertise and her call to action. She gives voice to those who cannot speak and my god does she take that seriously. Book her. Do it now – you will not be disappointed. I guarantee it.”

-  Cllr Martin McCullen

In addition to her work as a public speaker, Gemma also delivers lectures on a variety of topics including policing, health and social care, PGCE, youth work, media psychology, and forensic psychology at the higher education level. Her lectures are informative, hard-hitting and important for good practice.

FiLiA Speech

This is in memory of Sasha Marsden who was murdered three years ago today. This is the speech that her sister Gemma Aitchison made at the Feminism in London 2015 conference. It was one of the most powerful speeches I have ever heard from a very brave women who went on to set up YES Matters to campaign for education around consent and to tackle sexual objectification.

In memory of Sasha and with love to Gemma.
